Award for Groundbreaking Waste Partnership
An innovative scheme in which two Household Waste Recycling Centres are being run by volunteers has won a prestigious industry award.
It was the first scheme of its kind in Britain when the county council handed the keys to the sites in April to Warwickshire Community Recycling, a charitable enterprise collaboration between Warwickshire Community and Voluntary Action (CAVA) and the Heart of England Community Foundation.
Warwickshire County Council and Warwickshire Community Recycling won the Best Partnership Award at the Local Authority Recycling Advisory Committee (LARAC) Celebration Awards 2012 for the joint venture which has seen the successful transfer of the Stockton and Wellesbourne facilities to the voluntary sector.
The organisation also runs re-use shops at four of the council’s recycling centres. It has 22 volunteers and three apprentices signed up and is on schedule this year to raise £78,000 from the re-use shops and £48,000 from recycling income to give to good causes.
The LARAC judges said the initiative had multiple benefits for the environment and were impressed by the training offered.
Cllr Alan Cockburn, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for Sustainable Communities, said: “This award is recognition for all the effort put in by everyone involved in this pioneering project. The partnership has had an excellent start and we are pleased that it has been so well received by the community and the industry.
“Warwickshire’s household waste recycling centres continue to divert huge amounts of waste from landfill and working successfully with the third sector is continuing to deliver a valuable service to our residents.”
Paul Tolley, Company Secretary to Warwickshire Community Recycling, said: "This initiative has been a huge success so far and to win such an award after only six months of operation is truly staggering. It is a fantastic example of partnership working with a forward thinking local authority and is a great recognition of the hard work and dedication of Wayne Gibbons our Development Manager and his team of staff, apprentices and volunteers."
The overall aim is to establish a sustainable enterprise through which all surpluses generated are re-invested in to the communities of Warwickshire through a small grants scheme to be administered by the Heart of England Community Foundation from 2014 onward.
The Local Authority Recycling Advisory Committee (LARAC) Celebration Awards recognise the hard work, dedication and achievements of local authority recycling officers, their teams and partners within the UK.
