Environmental

Welcome
Welcome to WCAVA’s new Environmental pages. WCAVA achieved Environmental Body status in November 2009, which means that we now have additional resources available to help your group or organisation access a wider range of funds for projects that have an environmental benefit. Direct advice on individual projects is available by telephone or e-mail where eligibility criteria can be discussed and further advice can be given on the next steps to be taken. The next step would be a visit to your project where potential sources of funding can be discussed in more detail. In the future we will be introducing an online registration facility, which will allow us to make an initial assessment with regard to the eligibility of the project and on the nature of the support that may be required from us in order to move to the next stage in making an application for funding.

Landfill Communities Fund

In order to discourage the continued use of landfill as the primary method of dealing with waste in the UK a tax is levied on each tonne of waste deposited. In the case of waste containing an organic element, essentially kitchen waste, the rate of tax rises by a fixed amount every year. Most of the money involved goes into the general taxation pot and is spent on the variety of services that are the responsibility of central government. A small portion of this money, currently up to 6%, can be paid directly to groups working in the communities that are directly affected by specific landfill operations. In order to be eligible to receive these funds a number of criteria must be met. Once it is demonstrated that these basic requirements are fulfilled then each application is judged on the benefits that will be delivered to the community in which it operates.

In order for you to make a judgement on the potential use of this fund for your project a more detailed account of the Landfill Communities Fund has been included. This contains direct links to all of the organisations responsible for the delivery and administration of the fund as well as some other useful information. These can be used to pursue funding directly or as an aid when completing the registration process mentioned above.

Other Support for Environmental Projects

Warwickshire Environmental Trust, the group previously responsible for administering the Landfill Communities Fund, identified that the projects they supported fell into three categories and called these the natural, built and social environments. This neatly captures both the scope of the fund and its potential for supporting projects that are sustainable in all senses of the word.

WCAVA will continue to develop the idea of supporting these three environments and will seek to encourage the establishment of projects that look to link these three areas. The management of resources, whether this involves simple energy saving initiatives or the wholesale utilisation of waste within a community, together with a sensitivity for the structure of the surrounding environment, entails a high degree of participation. All projects should consider the impact that they have on the environment and should be aware of the benefits that will follow from mitigating that impact.

In order to achieve the above additional sources of support may be required. The funding section of this website can be used to explore other sources of funding and a link is also available to the GreenGrantsMachine. As well as providing a route to potential funders this site will develop into a resource for those seeking to establish the relationships needed to ensure that the work that you are passionate about will be able to continue into the future. To this end we are initiating a database of existing and forthcoming projects and have provided a template that can be used to record these. This can be used both to inform your own practice and to look for potential partners. In addition to this there is a page containing links to other organisations that offer advice and support on a wide range of issues.
