Warwickshire Community Recycling Shortlisted for LARAC Awards
The Local Authority Recycling Advisory Committee (LARAC) have announced that the fourth annual LARAC Celebration Awards, which recognise the hard work, dedication and achievements of local authority recycling officers, their teams and partners within the UK will be held in Warwickshire and that WCR has been shortlisted for an award.
Warwickshire Community Recycling (WCR) began operating two waste recycling sites and four re-use shops in Warwickshire on 2nd April 2012. WCR manages both sites at Wellesbourne and Stockton as well as operating re-use shops on these sites and operates re-use shops at the sites in Shipston on Stour and Kenilworth.
This joint venture was established between Warwickshire Community and Voluntary Action and the Heart of England Community Foundation to achieve three key objectives:
• Enabling the continued operation of waste recycling sites in Warwickshire in the current economic climate.
• Establishing a cost-efficient and innovative approach to increase recycling rates and income generated from re-usable items to reduce landfill in the County.
• Increasing opportunities for employment, apprentices, volunteers and training.
The overall aim is to establish a sustainable enterprise through which all surpluses generated are re-invested in to the communities of Warwickshire through a small grants scheme to be administered by the Heart of England Community Foundation from 2014 onward.
Paul Tolley - Company Secretary to WCR said "This initiative has been a huge success so far and to be shortlisted for such an award after only 5 months of operation is truly staggering. It is a fantastic example of partnership working with a forward thinking Local Authority and is a great recognition of the hard work and dedication of Wayne Gibbons our Development Manager and his team of staff, apprentices and volunteers."
