Making health and care research more inclusive and representative of all communities

Since Autumn 2023, CAVA have been involved with supporting Coventry and Warwickshire Integrated Care Board develop a Research Engagement Network (REN) to make health and care research more inclusive and representative of all communities.

With funding received from NHS England and the Department of Health and Social Care partners from multiple local research networks, NHS Trusts, local universities, and community organisations have been working together in support of Coventry and Warwickshire Integrated Care System’s strategic priorities of tackling health inequalities and improving access to care.

Research is better when it involves people who will be affected from the conclusions/outcomes, helping to develop treatments, technologies, and services which better meet the needs of the population.

As part of the ongoing work, the REN team would like to involve more communities in conversations about research and to improve diversity of participation in all stages of health and care research.

CAVA is helping the REN to:

    • build trusting, mutually beneficial relationships with local communities

    • work with community members to make health and care research more inclusive and representative

    • improve research accessibility by identifying and removing barriers to participation in research

    • co-create with communities resources and health and care research which reflects. community priorities.

What types of research are there?

Sometimes when we think about health research, or ‘clinical’ research, we might think about testing out new drugs. But there is more to health research than this.

It can also include:

  • talking to researchers about your views, or filling in a questionnaire
  • working with researchers to ‘co-create’ a new treatment to make sure that it is as suitable as possible for potential patients vacancies.
